Vodafone Wireless Subscribers Get MySpace Access

Vodafone on Wednesday said it has partnered with MySpace to offer cell phone handsets preloaded with software for accessing the popular online social network to wireless subscribers.

The exclusive partnership marks MySpace's entry into the European mobile market, the companies said in a joint statement. The handset software would enable registered users of MySpace to edit their profiles, post photos and blogs, and send and receive messages.

MySpace, which is owned by News Corp., offers an application that users can download to their mobile phones for network access. London-based Vodafone has agreed to preload the software on handsets, and to also make the application available for download through its mobile portal. The MySpace handsets will be available first in the United Kingdom.

In partnering with MySpace, Vodafone is apparently banking on MySpace becoming as popular in Europe as it is in the United States, where it has 73.8 million monthly users, according to ComScore Networks. Tapping into online communities can bring additional revenue to mobile operators through charges for uploading and downloading data on the cellular network.
