MySpace signs up Vodafone as first European mobile phone partner

British telecoms giant Vodafone has said it had signed the first European deal with MySpace to allow its mobile phone subscribers to access the social networking website.

The tie-up is MySpace's first mobile phone deal in Europe and will allow Vodafone customers to access their online journals on the move, the companies said in a joint statement.

The service will launch in Britain later this year, before rolling out to other European countries, a Vodafone spokesman told AFP Wednesday.

Customers will be able to view and edit their MySpace profiles, find and add friends, post photos and blogs and send and receive MySpace messages on their phones, according to the statement.

"This partnership brings together the world's number one lifestyle portal and the world's leading mobile operator," said Colin Digiaro, senior vice president of international corporate development at MySpace.

Frank H. Rovekamp, Global Chief Marketing Officer at Vodafone, added:

"Today's announcement is a great example of Vodafone empowering its customers with new, internet-based services on their Vodafone live! handsets, helping people make the most of their time."

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch's News Corp bought MySpace for 580 million dollars in 2005.
